Storyboards

Let your images tell the story

Whether you take film or digital photographs your images can contain a story.

Holiday photographs, family photographs even portrait sequences hold the details of the time you spent taking them. Just by giving a small amount of thought to the story hidden within them you can bring a whole new angle to the finished set of images.

Taking digital photographs gives us you an amazing array of output possibilities and presentation options

As it is possible to archive our photographs in the original format and create interesting memories with copies, why not try something a bit different. Below are some pictures of my daughter, (pretty random photographs) but what’s the story here.

These images were all shot on auto using a compact camera without any set up or posing, and on the face of it are quite plain, with no real purpose.

Hidden within them is the story of the 10minutes leading up to Ellen cycling off on her own to meet a friend and go swimming at the local leisure centre. With only a minimum of editing it has been possible to focus on relevant parts of the images and create something quite memorable for our family.

Below is the finished image set.

By breaking free from the standard sizes and ratios you might expect with photographs, and also adding a title and the date, this becomes a saved memory that in years to come will remind us of the facts, no guess work will be required. Also hidden in these picture are a few other facts that will become obvious to my wife and I when we look at them in the future, one of which will be the time when Ellen really started to create her own life and independence from us.

The best part of this process was the speed in which the images were captured, edited and completed, in this case under 20 minutes.

This technique of working quickly and using different layouts also works very well if you like to make scrapbooks. Scrapbooking is still a growing market and goes hand in hand with digital photography and the stories found in the images you capture.
